How to get tax records and transcripts from IRS

Access to your IRS account can provide you with information about your previously filed tax returns or payments due.

It will also show information sent to the IRS by employers, banks, investment accounts or if you’ve been issued a 1099. Knowing what information the IRS already has can be quite useful if you have lost some of your tax records.

The first step is to create an ID.me account.

ID.me provides you access to IRS online services with a secure account that protects your privacy.

If you prefer not to use the online ID.me portal, you can have the information mailed to you by sending form 4506-T Request for Transcript of Tax Return. Individuals can fill in this this online form https://sa.www4.irs.gov/oat/ instead.

Lastly, you can try calling the IRS Help Desk 800-829-4933
